It’s hard to imagine a more enchanted setting than visitors will find in this Fairy Tale Cottage. Tucked away in a private corner of Lobdell Lake, visitors will be captivated by the unique art pieces which reflect the owners’ profession as art dealers. The style of this home belies the fact that it is relatively new construction (1998). Since being purchased in 2002 by the current owners, the façade and ground have been enhanced with unique painting, art, etc. Even the well house has been constructed and painted to look like a mini-cottage. There is a charming gold fish pond and fountain, climbing roses, and a mix of annuals and perennials.
This 1894 waterfront home is a tribute to “BAGELS” MEMORIAL garden. It was the first home built on the north side of the Linden Mill Pond. The current owners acquired the house in 1973. The house and the gardens have been a work in progress for 50 years. Among the treasures is a rare (for Michigan) Ginko tree. The gardens and flowerbeds have been a catharsis for the owners, who suffered two critical life altering events: 1) the deaths of their children, Lacey (AKA Bagel) and Joshua; 2) Joanie’s catastrophic car accident. Digging in the “Dirt” and creating beautiful flowerbes has been wonderful therapy for the owners. Perennials, hydrangea, attractive red bud trees, many annuals, and yard art all combine to provide a calming setting on the shore of the Shiawassee River (Linden Mill Pond).
Welcome to this Lake House on the north side Lobdell Lake. Original owners have worked since 2001 to landscape this once empty lot. They even have a book of the plants they’ve planted through the years. With no particular gardening training, just selecting what appealed to them, they’ve transformed the yard with a beautiful tri-color birch tree, dahlias, hydrangeas, roses and more. They’ve further supplemented the plantings with lots of pots, including various vegetables grown in pots; and assorted yard art throughout the front and back of the home.
Wait until you discover this Hidden Gem, veiled in plain sight in this subdivision home on a corner lot. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the abundance of plants, colors, shrubs, vegetable garden, and yard art throughout this property. Not the least amazing is the adorable she-shed (built as an alternative so that all the gardening items could be retained, and turn the garage back into a shelter for their vehicles) decorated for each season throughout the year. From zero landscaping when the house was built 20 years ago, all trees, gardens, etc. have been loving planted to provide this darling of the neighborhood. Enjoy the colors and textures of the roses, coleus, quick-fire hydrangea, Pinky Winky, and annuals in unexpected places. Relish the shade of the 3 sisters (3 Peppermint Patty crab trees).
A real treat for the eye await this Hosta and Day Lilly Paradise. The current owners began transforming this 1962 ranch home when they moved in almost 30 years ago. Inspired by the love and expertise handed down by her mother and grandmother, Karen has carefully and creatively planted thousands of roses, coral bells, hostas, and day lilies including “collector” variants such as the Dolly Llama day lilly. Nine acres of rolling landscape include outbuildings where David restores vintage automobiles. There’s also a gorgeous yellow magnolia tree & vegetable garden.
A classic example of Pink Victorian, this turn-of-the-century (19th - 20thcentury) home will entertain you with its wide variety of roses, delphinium, hostas, phlox, red phlox, hibiscus, and more. The shade garden is a lovely spot to escape summer’s heat. In addition to the house and the main yard (raised and surrounded by classic iron fencing), there’s a beautiful carriage house, banana tree, and yard art throughout. In the 12 short years that they’ve cultivated the gardens, the owners have restored this striking yard to the glory of yesteryear.
Here’s your chance for a close up view of this 1859 Greek Revival home that you may have driven or walked past in downtown Linden. What a treat to see the details in this Japanese/English Garden. The Japanese garden includes a year-round Koi and Goldfish pond, classic Japanese pottery and art, bonsai tree, and more. The English garden features at least two exemplary areas including a variety of ferns, pottery, statuary, fragrant plantings, moss balls, grape vines, etc. The functioning greenhouse was built around windows from the old St John Rectory in Fenton. Larger plantings include Snow-in-Summer, dogwood, and a variety of Michigan wildflowers. All work has been completed by husband and wife who have backgrounds in masonry, carpentry, and professional landscaping so you can imagine the quality of the work.
The Linden Community Garden is now a “People’s Garden”. It uses sustainable practices beneficial to both people and wildlife, and a teaching component regarding resilient food systems. This garden serves different purposes including producing food, maintaining habitat for wildlife, conservation, beautification as well as education and training. Originally created in 2014, the garden was out of service for a few years then restored in 2022. About 30% of the produce generated from the garden is donated to the community. The Master Gardener who runs this garden started at a community based garden in Clio then saw the possibility of refurbishing this plot to help people in the Linden community. Last year there were 22 plots worked by 19 gardeners. In addition to vegetables, several gardeners plant different flowers each year assuring variety each year.
